Service Description

You will learn how to support people experiencing mental health issues. We will give you the practical skills to help, and the confidence and knowledge to have conversations around mental illness. Dr Cheryl Hawkins, an experienced psychiatrist, and an approved Mental Health First Aid England instructor, will lead these sessions to deepen your understanding of mental ill health and encourage you to make a difference to the people around you. MHFA England is the only provider of licensed Mental Health First Aid Instructor Training in England. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training teaches people how to identify the signs that someone may be experiencing a mental health issue. It will help you to understand them and offer initial help. It won’t teach you to be a therapist, but it will teach you how to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis – and even potentially stop a crisis from happening. You will also gain the skills to enable someone to find the support they might need. This could be through self-help books or websites, accessing therapy services through their GP, their school or place of work, online self-referral, support groups, and more. What’s more, you’ll gain an understanding of how to support positive wellbeing and tackle stigma in the world around you. Delivery is classroom based over two days, with time for breaks and lunch built in. There will be a mixture of presentations, group discussions and workshop activities Each session is built around a Mental Health First Aid action plan We limit numbers to 16 people per course so that the instructor can keep people safe and supported while they learn Everyone who completes the course gets: -A certificate of attendance to say you are a Mental Health First Aider -Three years’ access to MHFAider support and benefits which includes 24/7 digital support through the MHFAider Support App®. From there, you will find exclusive resources, ongoing learning opportunities and the benefit of joining England’s largest community of trained MHFAiders®. -A quick reference card for the Mental Health First Aid action plan Information about MHFA England and its courses can be found at mhfaengland.org
