Service Description

Dr Cheryl Hawkins, an experienced psychiatrist and foster carer, will lead these sessions to deepen your understanding of mental ill health and encourage you to make a difference to young people. You will learn how to support young people experiencing mental health issues. We will give you the practical skills to help, and the confidence and knowledge to have conversations around mental illness. This course qualifies you as a Youth Mental Health First Aider, giving you: - An in-depth understanding of young people’s mental health and factors that affect wellbeing - Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues - Confidence to reassure and support a young person in distress - Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening - Knowledge to help a young person recover their health by guiding them to further support, whether that’s through self-help sites, their place of learning, the NHS, or a mix, and engaging with parents, carers and external agencies where appropriate - Ability to support a young person with a long term mental health issue or disability to thrive - Tools to look after your own mental wellbeing Everyone who completes the course gets; - A certificate of attendance to say you are a Youth Mental Health First Aider certificate valid for three years - A digital Youth MHFA manual to refer to whenever you need it - A workbook including some helpful tools to support your own mental health Following the course, your will be invited to join the Association of Mental Health First Aiders – England’s first and only membership body for MHFAiders, and the largest community of its kind. The Association of Mental Health First Aiders gives you access to exclusive resources and learning opportunities to empower you to carry out your role effectively. This includes: - The MHFAider Support App®. Access to features such as a 24/7 text support service, and signposting to a national database of health services - The MHFA England Online Learning Hub. This includes resources such as course manuals and Youth MHFAider guides - First-hand insights.
